BAY-SCAPING

According to the City of Virginia Beach's Environmental Management Center Website, "Bay-scaping" refers to "landscaping techniques that will minimize pollutants flowing from our lawns, rooftops, and driveways into the Chesapeake Bay watershed (or any watershed for that matter)."

This means BACK BAY, too!

The following principles can help you to protect water quality and habitat for water dependent species in Back Bay:

1.  Practice Sound Landscape Management  (minimize fertilizer use and time it according to professional advice)

2.  Conserve Water (avoid watering during hot times of day when evaporation reduces watering efficiency)

3.  Consider Alternative Lawn Sizes (plant more gardens and meadows instead of grass)

4.  Use Native Plants Where Appropriate (they require less water and nutrients than exotics)

5.  Design and Plan Carefully
