II. MARSH. The second habitat you encounter would be
considered a marsh, like the one to the right which contains such plants as
cattails, spikerush, salt meadow cordgrass, goldenrod, bulrush, bayberry, and
pond pines. Unfortunately, the common reed (Phragmites australis)
population is flourishing as an invasive species and choking out the native
grasses and other marsh plants.
Across
Ashville Bridge Creek you will also see needle rush , fern and cattail along
with loblolly pines in the distance. Animals that may frequent
these areas are nutria, muskrat, and raccoon. Bird species that will
frequent the areas are rail, bittern, king fisher, black duck, wood duck,
heron, and egret.
