Nimmo Parkway Being Reconsidered (Published in the Back Bay Restoration Foundation Jan/Feb 2003 Newsletter) Believe it or not the Virginia Beach City Council will again consider whether to extend Nimmo Parkway to Sandbridge in February. The public has been misled to believe that Nimmo Parkway would be a better alternative to making Sandbridge Road improvements. The extension of Nimmo Pkwy will destroy wetlands needed to protect us against flooding, will fragment the forest habitat in Back Bay NWR, will spawn undesirable development, and will waste tens of millions of your taxpayer dollars. Recently, during periods of heavy rains there was flooding throughout Virginia Beach, but none along Sandbridge road. Why? The wetlands along Sandbridge Road were doing their job. Wetlands control flooding, filter out pollutants, and provide valuable habitat for wildlife. This is one of the basic lessons taught to fourth graders, and yet today there are adults that don’t seem to comprehend this elementary concept. Destruction of wetlands = big problems for humans. Please email VB council members (ctycncl@vbgov.com) and tell them to vote NO on Nimmo.
