PLANNING YOUR FOREST Proper placement of trees is critical for your enjoyment and their long-term survival. A few things to think about before planting are: 1. Regulations pertaining to placement of trees. 2. Consider the tree's ultimate size. Will it be too near your house or other structures? 3. Will it obstruct driveways or sidewalks? Will it cause problems for buried or overhead utilities? After considering these items, choose your tree varieties based on their relative proximity to water or drier upland conditions. Certain trees can tolerate consistently wet soils, and others cannot. Next, consider choosing tree varieties that offer the most for wildlife, e.g. acorns, nuts, berries. Draw your forest plan on a piece of paper, deciding where to plant the trees to leave sufficient room for them to mature. After you've created your plan, start digging your holes for planting!!! This is when the fun really begins.
