PICTORIAL REFORESTATION PROJECT Tree Planting in the Back Bay Watershed On March 22, 2003, thanks to a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, we planted 227 trees in 2-gallon containers at our reforestation site. The trees that were planted were selected for their food value to the local wildlife, as well as to provide for biodiversity. The following is a list of what was planted: 34 Bald Cypress , 7 Persimmon, 90 Swamp White Oak, 75 Willow Oak, 11 Black Gum, and 10 Atlantic White CedarAbout 25 volunteers turned out to assist with the planting. 16 trees were left unplanted so that the Cub Scouts could plant them on another Saturday. Prior to the planting, soil samples were sent to Virginia Tech for testing of nutrients, pH, and other factors so that we could adequately feed the soil to provide the best possible environment for the trees.
Back in 2002, the local branch of the Virginia Department of Forestry donated six (6) containered green ash trees as well as fifty (50) green ash seedlings and two hundred fifty (250) swamp chestnut oak seedlings. All of these in honor of Arbor Day. The six (6) containered trees were transported and planted on April 12, 2002, thanks to volunteers, Herb Jones, Jim Phipps and Henry Rawles. BEFORE AFTER Then on April 20, 2002, BBRF volunteers: Bruce Julian; Jim Phipps; Kevin Baker; Judy, Ivy, and Daemon Medeiros; Guy, Amy and Merry Rogers; Kaitlin, Vicky and Karen Boggi; Darrell Kristo and Eve Estes Butts planted the three hundred (300) tree seedlings. All of these great volunteer efforts were part of a reforestation project held by BBRF in partnership with BBNWR on two open acres of Refuge property purchased in the Refuge acquisition program. The reforestation site is located on Nanny's Creek Road in the Back Bay watershed.
Its going to be really exciting to watch these little seedlings grow up into a mature natural forest!! Urban Forestry education programs have become a regular part of BBRF activities thanks to grants from the Virginia Department of Forestry. For more information on urban forestry and upcoming reforestation projects, see the "Events" page on this website or call the office.
