"The NEW trams are here!"

OUR NEW TRAM

TRAM INTERIOR

Come take the wildest ride of your life!......BBRF volunteers have made this one of the most successful projects for BBRF. Thousands of passengers have taken the ride which leaves from Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge parking lot and follows the west dike trail through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge to False Cape State Park.

WINTER TRAM SCHEDULE:  These are wonderful opportunities to observe a variety of migrating waterfowl amidst the beautiful backdrop of Back Bay.  Other than these special monthly tram tours, there is no public access to the Refuge’s impoundment areas from November through March, in order to minimize disturbance to wintering birds.

Advance reservations required. They will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  Call the Refuge at 721-2412.  Those holding reservations should meet at the Refuge headquarters parking lot at 12:45 p.m. the day of the trip. The tram will depart at 1 p.m., returning to the parking lot by 3:00 p.m. Participants are advised to dress warmly, as the trams are unheated, open air vehicles. Binoculars, birding field guide books, and sturdy footwear are also recommended. All Winter Tram trips will leave from the Visitor Contact Center at the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.  The price is $8 for adults and $6 for children under 12 and seniors over 62.  Please bring exact change for the driver if possible.

SUMMER

Back Bay/False Cape Tram Tours to Run Daily

Service Starting Memorial Day Weekend

The “Blue Goose Express Tram” now operates daily (weather permitting) leaving at 9 a.m. and returning at 12:45 p.m. through Labor Day from Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge parking lot. The cost to ride is still the same, 8$ for adults, $6 for children under 12 and seniors over 62. Dress according to the weather, wear good walking shoes, and bring a bag lunch or snacks, and something to drink. Don’t forget sunscreen and insect repellant, you’ll need them in warmer weather. A camera and binoculars would also be useful.

The Trams are operated by volunteers from BBRF. Visitors are invited to view the wildlife and exceptional scenery of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park from the open sided electric tram. The tram offers viewing opportunities of the many turtles, feral pigs, horses, fox, and some of the nearly 300 bird species common to the barrier spit. Upon arrival at False Cape Visitor Contact Station, tram riders have almost two hours to spend hiking, sunbathing at the beach, birdwatching, or photographing the beautiful scenery.

New Tram Driver Training

New Tram Driver training will be conducted again in 2007 at the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge as needed. New and seasoned drivers learned about tram operation, plus the latest wildlife and management issues in Back Bay to share with riders. Prospective tram drivers also ride with experienced drivers to learn the ropes. We welcome new drivers and ask those who are interested to contact Nils Bahringer at 412-0238.
