Back Bay Tram Winter Schedule

BBRF volunteers have made this one of our most successful projects.   Thousands of passengers have taken the ride which leaves from the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge parking lot and follows the west dike trail, traveling to Virginia's False Cape State Park. There are limited times which the tram runs during the winter months due to migration.

Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park are located in the Sandbridge area of southern Virginia Beach. The refuge is a key resting and feeding location for various migratory and resident birds along the Atlantic Flyway. The Refuge is open from dawn to dusk daily.

The tram embarks from the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Contact Station, located at the end of Sandpiper Road, in Virginia Beach.

Directions to the refuge can be found here

    Two different trips are available:
  • The Winter Wildlife Watch Tram Tours are scheduled for February 14th and March 14th. The Tram will depart from the Refuge at 1:00 p.m. and is schedule to return at 3:00 p.m. on those days.
  • The Wash Woods Tram Tour is scheduled for February 28th and March 28th. This tour travels through the refuge and False Cape State Park. Upon arrival at False Cape, passengers may wish to hike the one mile trail to the site of the former Wash Woods Methodist Church. The steeple and the historic cemetery still remain at the site. The Tram will depart from the Refuge at 1:00 p.m. and is scheduled to return at 4:00 p.m. on those days.

In addition to the Tram fee, the daily Refuge entrance fee or one of several valid seasonal/yearly passes is required.

The cost to ride is $8 for adults, $6 for children under 12 and seniors over 62, under 3 is free. Dress according to the weather, wear good walking shoes, bring a bag lunch or snacks, and something to drink. A camera and/or binoculars would also be useful.

Tram capacity is limited to 24 passengers and reservations are required.

For further information about the Tram program, or to make reservations, call the refuge at (757)721-2412.
