URBAN FORESTRY

IN A

COASTAL ENVIRONMENT

What are Urban Forests?  They are the trees and other vegetation that grow in placeswhere people live, work and play.  Chances are that the city or county you live in has an urban forestry program aimed at planning for and maintaining the urban forest to take advantage of its many benefits.

Trees benefit our community in so many ways. Some of these BENEFITS are:

  • Increase in property values
  • Decrease in energy costs
  • Improvement in air quality
  • Reduction in storm water runoff
  • Decrease in soil erosion
  • Improvement in water quality
  • Creation of wildlife habitat

        For example, for:

  • Increase in community pride
  • Increase in recreational opportunities
  • Improvement in health and well-being
  • Reduction of noise levels
  • Creation of buffer zones

Although there are some costs to urban forestry such as planting, maintenance and removal, storms, program administration, and allergies, the benefits far outweigh these costs, especially when an urban forestry plan is adopted and carefully implemented.

NEW!  See the steps below and/or see our pictorial reforestation project in progress.

With so many benefits, how can we not take the time to invest in our future?  Don't waste time, take these steps:

    1.    Choose the right tree varieties for a coastal ecosystem.

    2.    Plan your forest.
