WOOD DUCK NESTING BOXES

Each year in February, BBRF visits False Cape State Park to clean and maintain the wood duck nesting boxes.  These boxes are necessary to assist the recovery of the wood duck population as a large portion of their habitat has been destroyed.  Wood ducks require nesting cavities, such as hollow trees.  But if there aren't any of these cavities available, they can't nest.  We have learned that wood ducks will live in man-made bird boxes and the population has shown a rebound since the implementation of box installation programs.

There are dozens of boxes scattered throughout the park and several volunteers are needed to do the work over the course of the all-day project.  Please call to sign-up.

Some wood duck nesting boxes may be damaged from storms.  Some of these boxes are to be replaced using wood duck nesting boxes crafted by students from Lynnhaven Middle School.  Thanks Lynnhaven!

During the clean-out, we sometimes find unexpected residents in the wood duck boxes like raccoons, squirrels, or screech owls like the one pictured below.  There is also a level of camaraderie that develops throughout the event, such as that being displayed by volunteers Herb Jones and Bob Schandelmeier.  Jeff Butts is climbing a ladder to get into the "wood duck" box; turns out, this one is inhabited by a screech owl.
